What To Do After SPM in Malaysia
The months after SPM are loud with other people's opinions. Here is a straight look at the routes that are actually open to you, what each one costs you in time, and what to do if your results were not what you hoped for.
The main routes after SPM
Form 6 (STPM) and matriculation are pre-university routes. They take one to two years and lead towards a degree. They suit people who did well academically and want a university path.
Diploma at a polytechnic, college or university is a longer qualification, usually two to three years, and can lead into a degree later or into work directly.
TVET and skills training covers technical and vocational routes — public institutions and private academies that train you for a specific trade. These are shorter and job-focused.
Working straight away is a real option too, but without a skill behind it you are competing on availability rather than capability, and pay tends to stay flat.
If your results were not what you hoped
One exam does not decide what you are capable of. It measures how you performed on a particular set of papers on a particular week, and plenty of people who struggled in a classroom turn out to be excellent with their hands and their judgement.
What matters far more from here is whether you build something you can prove. A skill nobody can take from you beats a certificate nobody checks.
Where a skilled trade fits
A trade is worth serious consideration if you would rather be paid to learn on real equipment than sit through two more years of theory, and if you want to be earning sooner rather than later.
Be honest about the trade-offs, though. Trades are physical, you will work in hot and awkward places, and the first year is genuinely hard. If you want an office job or an academic career, a trade is the wrong door.
What a trade does offer is a direct line between capability and income, and work that cannot be outsourced or done remotely. A national study by TalentCorp and the Ministry of Human Resources (2025) put around 620,000 Malaysian jobs at high risk of automation — hands-on repair work is not among them.

Ask three questions. How soon do I need to be earning? Do I learn better by reading or by doing? And at the end of this, what can I actually prove I can do?
If the honest answers are "soon", "by doing", and "something real", a skilled trade deserves a place on your shortlist.
Common questions
What can I do after SPM if my results are bad?
Skills-based routes do not gate you on exam results the way pre-university routes do. Our own intake is based on attitude and effort rather than your certificate — we look at how you show up over a few days, not what your slip says.
Is TVET better than a diploma?
Neither is better in general — they answer different questions. A diploma is longer and more academic; TVET is shorter and job-focused. If you want to be working and earning sooner, and you learn by doing, TVET tends to fit better.
Can I get a job straight after SPM?
Yes, but without a skill behind it you are competing on availability rather than capability, and pay tends to plateau. Adding a trade first raises the ceiling considerably.
How long is a skills course after SPM?
It varies by provider and trade. Our HVAC-R programme is four months of hands-on training, after which you are certified with a verified Skill Passport.
